Carkeek Salmon Party

Join your friends at EcoCity Action to see salmon spawning in Piper's Creek within Carkeek Park! Learn about their journey and habitat restoration/stormwater management in the Piper's Creek watershed.

Approximate detailed schedule:

  • 1:30pm: Meet at the Carkeek Park Eddie McAbee Entrance picnic tables. We'll be holding up a sockeye salmon stuffed animal on a stick. We'll do introductions and a short talk here.

  • 1:45pm - 2:15pm: Hike along Piper's Creek Trail to just past the Carkeek Pump Station (~0.8 miles on uneven, potentially muddy terrain). For anyone arriving by car, you can meet us here at 2:15pm (just off of the first parking lot): https://maps.app.goo.gl/MS6ZD2Y44cCkDd1f6. We will do a short talk here.

  • 2:30pm - 3:30pm: Hang out at Carkeek watching the salmon spawn! Roam around as you wish.

  • 3:30pm - 4pm: Meet back at the first parking lot and hike back to Carkeek Park Eddie McAbee Entrance where we started.

  • ~4pm: Event ends. Optionally get food together somewhere!

WARNING!!!! OUR HIKING ROUTE WILL NOT BE ACCESSIBLE. We are so, so sorry about this. The only way to reasonably get to the salmon viewing area in Carkeek via transit is by riding the bus to the Eddie McAbee Entrance and then hiking along Piper's Creek trail to get into the heart of the park. If you aren't able to do this hike, please join us at the first parking lot linked above at 2:15pm.

Additional logistics:

  • You can reach Carkeek Park Eddie McAbee Entrance by taking the 28, D, or 40 busses.

  • Please eat lunch ahead of time. There won't be any substantial food inside Carkeek Park or on the hike. Sorry about this. :(

  • We will be there during Carkeek’s Annual Salmon Celebration, so there will be many booths, donuts for snacking, and volunteers around.

  • Because of the Annual Salmon Celebration event, there may be port-a-potties near the salmon viewing area. If not, then there is a public bathroom up in the playground area here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Wdkvm2sKyzf8Zwvf6. Note that this is a 9 min, 0.4-mile uphill-ish walk from the first parking lot. It is very far. :(

  • We will send a reminder email to those who RSVP with a Signal thread to join for the day in case you're running late or get lost, etc.

  • Let us know if additional accommodations are needed a week in advance by emailing info@ecocityaction.org.

What to bring:

  • Hiking shoes that can get muddy

  • Water

  • Umbrella and/or rain jacket

  • Snacks if you want
